San Clemente High School’s “Mary Poppins” is practically perfect in every way, from the magic created by the technical designers and crew to the dedication and inspiration of the actors.
Jane and Michael Banks are in desperate need of a caring nanny. Mary Poppins flies in and is perfect for the job. In her time with the Banks family, she helps them through major turmoil and brings them closer together.
Cassidy McCleary plays Mary Poppins with a sense of elegance and understated sarcasm. She uses an energetic voice to appeal to the children but is also prim and proper, giving them a mother figure. McCleary connects with characters of all ages and is fully engaged in the story she is telling.
Jack Katke portrays Bert, the narrator of the story. Katke is fearless, giving his all in every moment. He reacts truthfully to what is being said and done, and there is never a dull moment when he is on stage. Katke is jolly throughout most of the show, which gives him the opportunity to shine even brighter in the solemn moments.
Of course, the show would not be complete without the crew. Shea Donnelly leads the stage managers, calling the cues with little error, which allows for the audience’s suspension of disbelief. Maisy Strand and Abby Ambach join…
